　　于是晋灵公与大夫屠案贾密谋派人行刺赵盾。刺客趁着夜色偷偷溜进相府，见赵盾晚睡早起，忠心勤政，被感动了，于是就告诉赵盾说有人要害他，之后便授树而死。
　　晋灵公一看没能除掉赵盾，就又叫屠案贾训练了一只凶猛的狼犬，假意召赵盾进宫喝酒，趁着机会放狼火扑杀赵盾，就在这危难时刻，赵盾的卫士提弥明挺身而出。一下子杀死了狠犬。晋灵公看这个计策也失败，恼羞成怒，索性一不做二不休，下令理伏在两旁的刀斧手扑杀赵盾。提弥明护着赵盾，且战且退，但终因寡不敌众，血戏宫廷。这时幸亏又一位受过赵盾救命之恩的武士灵辄舍身保护，赵盾才逃脱虎口。到了宫外，恰透其子闻讯率家丁前来接应，父子俩不取再回相府，急忙出了西门，准备亡命国外。途中遇见打猎回来的族弟赵穿，问明缘由后，赵穿劝他不要离开晋国。应从长计议。于是，赵后父子就暂时进居河东。
　　赵穿回城后，用计谋取得晋灵奋的信任，又以搜罗天下美女为名，把任巨屠案贾支使到外地去。后来，他便乘晋灵奋在桃园喝酒游乐时，指挥亲信把晋灵公杀了。赵穿随即把赵盾迎回国都。
　　晋灵公幕虎无道。对于他的死，举国上下拍手称快。但赵盾总觉得，谋杀国君的名声对于世代忠良的赵氏家族实在不好听。
　　一天，他召来太史童狐，让童孤把记载国家大事的史简拿给他看，只见上面写着:乙丑(公元前607年)秋七月，赵盾在桃园谋害国君炙幕。赵盾大吃一惊，辫白道:“太史，你搞错了吧!谁不知道国君不是我杀的，当时我正逃亡在外，国君的死怎么能归罪在我身上呢?"这时董孤义正词严地说:''你身为国相，掌管国家里里外外的大事，虽说你当时没在朝廷，却仍然在国境内:而且你回来重掌朝政后也没有追究杀害国君的责任，那这件事是不是与你有关系呢？事情就是这样千的，我作为一个史官应该忠于事实。”
　　赵后也算懂礼，也没有加害董孤。羞孤的辱重事实在历史上留下了美名。
　　我们且不说赵盾和赵穿合起来把昏庸无道的国君除掉对不对，但事实就是事实，整个事件的本来面目就是那样子的，应该尊重，"水退石头在，好人说不坏"，当历史的溯水退去之后，赵盾是好是坏自有后人评说，但董狐的实事求是值得称道的。事实是经得起检验，赵盾圾后也没有妄自在事实上做手脚向自己倾斜。也算是为自己赢得了一点历史筹码。赵盾这个人是好是坏我们每个人都有自己的标准，但他尊重事实的气度令人点头称是。
　　其实，历史上很多是非功过当时都不确定，只有事实留在那里。好人自好，坏人自坏，不会因为任何事情而改变。正如罗贯中在《三国演义》中所言:震滚长江东逝水，浪花淘尽英雄，是非成败转头空，青山依旧在，几度夕阳红。
　　这是一个朴素但永恒的道理一一什么就是什么，不会变。&
　　小的大道理
　　"水退石头在，好人说不坏"，秦桧当初想尽办法用“莫须有”的罪名杀害岳飞，韩世忠听后大为愤怒地说:，“你这个'英须有'的菲名怎能令天下人信服?”范如圭也上书痛责秦桧:“你若不是丧心病狂，怎会做出如此不讲根据的事来?你必定会遗臭万年!”
　　事实确实是这样，岳飞终究是英雄，而秦桧确实也遗臭万年。
