Style: Hemingway?s fiction usually focuses on people living essential, dangerous lives―soldiers, fishermen, athletes, bullfighters―who meet the pain and difficulty of their existence with stoic courage. His celebrated literary style, influenced by Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein, is direct, terse, and often monotonous, yet particularly suited to his elemental subject matter. As or more important, Hemingway?s style, with its consistent use of short, concrete, direct prose and of scenes consisting exclusively of dialogue, gives his novels and short stories a distinctive accessibility that is immediately identifiable with the author. Transcendentalism It also called
Renaissance
period from the 1830s roughly until the end of the American Civil War in which American literature, in the wake of the Romantic movement, came of age as an expression of a national spirit. 19th-century movement of writers and philosophers in New England who were loosely bound together by adherence to an idealistic system of thought based on a belief in the essential unity of all creation, the innate goodness of man, and supremacy of insight over logic and experience for the revelation of the deepest truths. Therefore, transcendentalism can be best understood as a somewhat late and localized manifestation of romantic movement in literature and philosophy. Transcendentalism was also an ethical guide to life for a young nation of America. The Essayists : Ralph Waldo Emerson

Local Color The style of writing derived from the presentation of the features and peculiarities of a particular locality and its inhabitants. Simply it means The use of regional detail in a literary or artistic work. The name is given especially to a kind of American literature that in its most characteristic form made its appearance just after the Civil War and for nearly three decades was the single most popular form of American literature. Term applied to literature which emphasizes its setting, being concerned with the character of a district or of an era, as marked by its customs, dialects, costumes, landscape or other peculiarities that have escaped standardizing cultural influences. The local color movement came into particular prominence in Am after the Civil War, perhaps as an attempt to recapture the glamour of a past era, or to portray the sections of the reunited country. Fiction writers like Sarah Orne Jewett, Bret Harte, O. Henry, and Mark Twain have been identified within this tradition.
lost generation At the end of the First World War took place a most important literary development: the modernistic trend in which a new group of writers called the “Lost Generation” rebelled against former ideals and values, but replaced them only be despair or a cynical hedonism. The Lost Generation is a term used to describe a group of American intellectuals, poets, artists and writers fled to France in the post WWI years to reject the values of American materialism and to seek the bohemian lifestyle in Paris. Full of youthful idealism, these individuals sought the meaning of life, drank excessively, had love affairs and created some of the finest American literature to date. The main representatives of Lost Generation include F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos..
Imagism It is a Movement in U.S. and English poetry characterized by the use of concrete language and figures of speech, modern subject matter, metrical freedom, and avoidance of romantic or mystical themes,
aiming at clarity of expression through the use of precise visual images. It grew out of the Symbolist Movement in 1912 and was initially led by Ezra Pound, Amy Lowell, and others. The Imagist manifesto came out in 1912 showed three Imagist poetic principles: direct treatment of the “thing”(no fuss, frill, or ornament), exclusion of superfluous words(precision and economy of expression), the rhythm of the musical phrase rather than the sequence of a metronome(free verse form and music). Pound defined an image as that which presents an intellectual and emotional complex in an instant of time, and later he extended this definition when he stated that an image was “a vortex or cluster of fused ideas, endowed with energy.” There existed great influence of Chinese poetry on the Imagist movement. Imagists found value in Chinese poetry was because Chinese poetry is, by virtue of the ideographic and pictographic nature of the Chinese language, essentially imagistic poetry. The Harlem Renaissance The Harlem Renaissance (HR)
was a flowering of the arts in the 1920?s and 30?s. African Americans used writing, music, and art to demonstrate strong beliefs. Many of these beliefs were grounded in the works of W.E.B. Du Bois who emphasized the necessity of black liberation, retaining black cultural pride, and not giving into white standards. Especially the notion of \white accepted it. New ideas and beliefs were expressed in innovative, non- conventional ways.Writers associated with the Harlem Renaissance include Arna Bontemps, Langston Hughes, Claude Mckay, Countee Cullen, James Weldon Johnson, Zora Neale Hurston, and Jean Toomer. HR was more than just a literary movement: it included racial consciousness, \back to Africa\movement led by Marcus Garvey, racial integration, the explosion of music particularly jazz, spirituals and blues, painting, dramatic revues, and others. It was a huge leap for black liberation and culture.
Naturalism Naturalism is the outgrowth of Realism, a prominent literary movement in mid-19th-century France and elsewhere. Industrialism produced financial giants, but at the same time created an industrial proletariat entirely at the mercy of external forces beyond their control. New ideas about man and man?s place in the universe began to take root in America. Darwinian concepts like “the survival of the fittest” and “the human beast” became popular catchwords and standards of moral reference in an amoral world. French naturalism, with its new technique and new way of writing, appealed to the imagination of the younger generation. Naturalist fiction in the United States often concentrated on the non-Anglo, ethnically marked inhabitants of the growing American cities. Most American naturalists demonstrated a concern with the animal or the irrational motivations for human behavior, sometimes manifested in connection with sexuality and violence. The writers of naturalism tore the mask of gentility to pieces and wrote about the helplessness of man, his insignificance in a cold world, and his lack of dignity in face of the crushing forces of environment and heredity. In their works there is a desire to assert one?s human identity, to define oneself against the social and natural forces one confrontsThey reported truthfully and objectively, with a passion for scientific accuracy and an overwhelming accumulation of factual detail. The major representatives of American naturalists include Jack London, Stephen Crane, Frank Norris, Theodore Dreiser and so on.

To Helen This poem consists of three sections, while each section has five elements. Allan Poe wrote the poem with the rhetorical devices of English pronunciation. We can see the beauty of nature, music, and the words which contains dark and bright, dream and waking, fantasy and true, ideal and reality, meaning and image.
Helen , the most beautiful woman in the world ,was highly praised in this poem. The poet described her unique beauty by using the words ?hyacinth hair ? ?classic face? and so on. I prefer the “beauty\-shaped women but something specific which we can see and think of.
At the same time, %us the poet's subjective inner feelings when he was pursuing the beauty in real life. People can also understand the loneliness, depression, helplessness , struggle and the joy after arriving on the other side in the poet. In fact, the author's life experiences and thoughts has made the poet?s love combined to the admiration for Helen. In this poem, Allan expressed his respect and insistent pursuit to the to the art, truth, and love.
The themes and writing style of ?A Farewell to Arms? The story focuses on a relationship between an American officer fighting for the Italian army and a British nurse during World War I. It therefore covers two of the most common topics in Western literature: love and war. In the first part, special emphasis is laid on the damage of the war, the war destroys not only Henry?s body but also his love with Catherine. In the second part, it discusses the process of how did Hemingway?s antiwar idea come into being through three phrases: being lost, being against war and calling on resuscitation of humanity. The last part aims at discussing the influence of Hemingway?s war experience and the First World War on his writings of war theme. The book provides a first-person account of the Great War, which is a critical event in Western history, and it discusses some of the perceived cultural differences between Americans, Italians, Britons, Austrians, and Germans.
Being distinguished from many greatest American writers, Hemingway is noted for his writing style. The language is simple and natural on the surface, but actually deliberate and artificial. Sometimes the simple style is made a little different. The dialogue is combined with the realistic and the artificial. However, this also means that the book sometimes describes important events in very few words.
The simplicity is highly suggestive, and often reflects the strong undercurrent of emotion. Occasionally, the author uses some figures of speech. Hemingway?s style is related to his experience as a journalist, his learning from many famous writers, and most importantly, his conscientious effort in looking for a style of his own. The influence of his style is great all over the world.
The linguistic features of Mark Twain?s work Mark Twain, who was called the best writer with the USA native distinguishing feature. His works are well known as humors and sarcasm. In Mark?s early time, he had been working as a S these experiences made him extensively contacts with the community and the civil language. The flexible use of the dialect is unique, though his straightforward colloquial language do not obey the rules of grammar. He use the oral English subtly to describe the hero?s daily lives . Moreover, His story heroes are limited to a specific historical period and a specific area who manage a strong dialect which makes his story more reliable.
Mark Twain also frequently use the allegory, personification, metonymy, pun and other spiritual figures to colorful his novel. When reading this kind of magical words ,at first we burst into laughter then turn back to think about it hardly.
